Life Coach or Therapist?

Many people wonder what the difference is between a life coach and therapist.
Here is a simple comparison to help you understand the distinction between the two,
so you know which is the best fit for you.

life coach:

  • provides supplemental support if mental health issues are not severe
  • helps you get from functioning to incredible life
  • helps you succeed and become more effective
  • helps you make meaningful progress on EVERYTHING, from losing weight to building a business
  • clarifies what you want to achieve and helps you build the future you want
  • specializes in mobilizing you into action!
  • works directly with you on the cost of sessions without involving insurance
  • does not work in a regulated profession, so be sure to choose a certified life coach who upholds ethical professional standards

therapist:

  • treats people with deep sadness, coupled with inability to function
  • gets you to functioning
  • helps you heal and become more self-aware
  • helps when emotional or mental health issues are disrupting your life
  • can, and often does, delve into your past to help you make sense of it and heal.
  • often works in conjunction with life coaches to help you create the best life possible
  • may or may not work with your insurance
  • is a licensed professional

If you still aren't sure what's best for you, think about what your goals are. Compare personalities. Compare backgrounds, education, life experience and skills. Sometimes the person matters more than the profession. See if the coach/therapist is good at helping her clients achieve their goals. Trust your intuition. We hope you find a home at You Got This Life Coaching, but if you need additional guidance to meet your needs, please let us know. We will be happy to assist you!
